BARNEYS GOES GREEN: OPENING LUXURIOUS CANNABIS SPACE
The Angels of the HIGH heavens have answered our calls. Barneys New York is launching a luxurious Cannabis store within a store. A HIGH-end headshop, literally called The High End, is expected to open in March at the Beverly Hills location. The 300-square foot flagship store will be located on the fifth floor, making Barneys the first major retailer to make the conscious decision to participate, contribute and help elevate the cannabis movement through their involvement. I can confidently assert this will set the precedent for other high-end fashion brands to follow. As many people are beginning to integrate cannabis into their lifestyles, I think companies are catching on to this green wave, as it is stated that the cannabis industry is set to hit $50 billion USD worldwide by 2020.
For this new venture, Barneys New York has partnered with luxury cannabis company, Beboe. New York Times has dawned Beboe as the “Hermès” of cannabis. I was first introduced to Beboe during my travels as I work with a plethora of dispensaries throughout Southern California. I fondly remember how their packaging stuck out immediately amongst all of the other brands. I even recall asking the manager of the specific shop I was at, “Who and what is that brand?” Low and behold, Beboe!
After doing my research, I discovered the company is the brainchild of a duo comprised of Scott Campbell and Clement Kwan.
For those unfamiliar, Scott Campbell is well-known throughout the world for his talents in tattooing. He has tattooed the likes of Penélope Cruz, Howard Stern and Marc Jacobs, just to name a few. Clement Kwan has a background in fashion, working with brands such as Theory, Dolce and Gabbana, and Diesel. He served as the president of U.S. operations for YOOX group, a global e-commerce retailer. Together, in addition to both being experienced cannabis growers, they have definitely found the luxurious intersection of cannabis and fashion with Beboe. The marijuana upstart is named after Mr. Campbell’s grandmother Be (short for Bernice) Boe, who used to make brownies to ease his mother’s pain as she battled cancer when he was a child.
In its beginning stages, The High End will include a Beboe limited edition silver vape pen, as well as will feature a collaboration with cannabis flower brand Sherbinskis, which will offer a new strain sold as a pre-rolled joint. However, customers will not be able to purchase any THC products in the store itself. At this time, The High End does not have a dispensary license, nor does it remain clear if they will be pursuing obtaining one. As an alternative, Beboe will handle any cannabis transactions through a delivery service called Emjay.
Don’t fret, the concept store will include cannabis paraphernalia, CBD-infused beauty products, jewelry and accessory items. I am sure many people are familiar with the Shine 24k Gold Rolling papers, which will also be available at The High End. Specialty lighters, ash trays, storage boxes with a luxurious stoner twist will be found amongst the shelves as well. I also can imagine it to be quite Instagram-friendly, too, especially for those who may not be ready to dish out $900 on a luxury glass bong.

Simply witnessing the progression of the cannabis industry breaking these boundaries and moving into a mainstream place, especially fashion-related, feels like a big win. There has been such a stigma around cannabis and it has been rewarding to be part of an industry with so many barriers to break through. Who would’ve thought the day would come where you can purchase your Louis Vuitton and rolling papers in the same vicinity? Well I actually did, hence the creation of my website. Anyhow, cannabis is just getting started and I can’t wait for the day it is federally legal so all of the gift bags at fashion week can contain cannabis products. Who knows, maybe we’ll catch Anna Wintour taking a puff. We know Rihanna's not shy.
