WHAT DO WE WATCH NOW THAT GAMES OF THRONES IS OVER?
Ok, not a huge television person but I go in and out of phases of keeping up on a T.V. show. Sometimes I like to take a short moment of my day to do nothing that matters and dive into an appealing plot line. It’s nice to take yourself out reality for a half hour or so. Below are a few shows I indulge in when I have time.
Queen of the South
My guilty pleasure television wise is mob, gang and cartel shows. Queen of the South is my current show of choice. I am watching it obsessively. Queen of the South is about a girl from Mexico, Teresa Mendoza, who goes from dating a cartel member to fleeing the country when her boyfriend is murdered. She ends up a drug mule but makes her way up to the top, not without going through many obstacles. Obstacles everyday people are most likely not facing. There’s a scene in the show where Teresa is compared to a flower growing through the mud. I resonated so much with this. I felt the parallel between Teresa, planting a seed, growing through the dark mud and eventually blossoming. I love a bad-ass female character that goes through evolution.
I recently was able to get a free subscription to Hulu. (Perks of paying for a Spotify account) I had seen a few things about this show, Ramy. I’ve always been interested in the Middle Eastern culture. I think it is beautiful. Everything from the language, to the land to the food has me eager to visit multiple areas. The show goes into detail about a first-generation Egyptian-American who is figuring out the balance between his Muslim faith/family upbringing and being a 20-something year old living life in America.
Grass is Greener
This is a Netflix documentary about cannabis presented by Hip-Hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy. Grass is Greener shows how cannabis influenced many aspects of the music world. Also showcased is the connection between politics and pot. It’s extremely informative in a way that keeps you engaged. Fab goes into detail about the racially biased history of the war on cannabis and how it’s still relevant to our current laws that are enforced today.
A week doesn’t go by that I don’t make an Office reference or watch one of the episodes. I believe The Office is good for your mental health. Some people don’t connect with The Office humor, but this show is forever in my heart. Michael Scott for prez.
Oh man, am I a sucker for Power. 50 Cent and Courtney Kemp did a phenomenal job portraying the lifestyles of powerful drug dealers living the lavish lifestyle of riches, high-risks, and violence in New York City. Power shows the double-life of James “Ghost” St. Patrick, a business man in both legal and illegal endeavors. He wants to move forward legitimately but the streets are hard to leave behind.
Game of Thrones
If you, along with many others, have moments of Game of Thrones withdrawals, you can always rewatch them. There is a documentary that came out recently on HBO about the making of Game of Thrones too. I started it, but have yet to finish it. I recently started the books, I’m really looking forward to them. Game of Thrones is a fictional world that is really easy to get absorbed into. If you haven’t seen it, know that it is a commitment to start watching, but well worth it.
